Priest shot outside French church, suspect arrested

An attacker armed with a sawn-off shotgun seriously wounded a Greek Orthodox priest in a shooting outside a church in the French city of Lyon on Saturday, with the country still reeling from a deadly church attack days before. Nikolaos Kakavelaki, 52, was closing his Lyon church mid-afternoon when he was attacked and is now in a serious condition in hospital, said a police source who asked not to be named. The attacker fled the scene but Lyon’s public prosecutor later announced that a suspect had been arrested. “A person who could correspond to the description given by the initial witnesses has been placed in policy custody,” prosecutor Nicolas Jacquet said, adding that the suspect had not been carrying a weapon when he was arrested. The priest was shot twice in the chest at point-blank range, according to sources close to the inquiry. The motive for the attack was not clear. “At this stage, no hypothesis is being ruled out, nor favoured,” Jacquet said. But it comes at a time w...

With 1 million cases, England to enter national lockdown next week

Boris Johnson British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says a lockdown will be put in place in England next week as part of efforts to stop a surge in coronavirus cases, as the country reached the 1 million mark for total confirmed infections on Saturday. Non-essential shops, as well as leisure and entertainment venues, will be closed from Thursday through December 2, as will pubs, bars and restaurants, which can only offer takeaway and delivery services. Schools and other educational institutes will remain open, however. “I’m afraid from Thursday the basic message is the same: Stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives,” said Johnson, warning that without the measures, the death rate could grow even higher. “Christmas is going to be different this year, perhaps very different, but it’s my sincere hope and belief that by taking tough action, we can allow families across the country to be together,” Johnson said, citing similar measures by France, Germany and Belgium. He added ...

The Storm is Here

The members of the Nigerian government should be careful not to take strong-arm measures against these protesters, otherwise, they will have to answer to God. By Femi Aribisala Roughly two months ago, God gave me a prophecy that I then preached during a Sunday Service at Healing Wings, Chapel of Faith, Lagos. I entitled it: “A Storm is Coming.” I said on that occasion: “There is a storm coming. Therefore, prepare for battle. But those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High will not be affected.” The prophecy came to me in a vision. In the vision, I was talking to a friend of mine, Benzak Uzuegbu. Suddenly, I became like one of the sons of Issachar who had “understanding of the times.” (2 Chronicles 12:32). I looked up and noticed a change in the clouds. Although it was daytime, the sky suddenly became dark and I said to Benzak: “Look, a storm is coming.” Then the scene changed. I was no longer with Benzak but with the Head of State in a strange house. I knew instinctive...

(Photo by Ludovic Marin / AFP) French President Emmanuel Macron sought to calm flaring tensions with Muslims around the world on Saturday, telling an Arab TV channel he understood that caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed could be shocking while lashing out at “lies” that the French state was behind them. France is on edge after the republication in early September of cartoons of the prophet by the Charlie Hebdo weekly, which was followed by an attack outside its former offices, the beheading of a teacher and an attack on a church in Nice Thursday that left three dead. The country was further shaken by a new incident on Saturday, when an attacker armed with a sawn-off shotgun shot an Orthodox priest as he closed his church in the French city of Lyon before fleeing, a police source said. The 52-year-old priest, who has Greek nationality, wa...

In Nigeria, what is fake news?

By Tonnie Iredia Many terms that appear simplistic to the ordinary person may in truth be quite difficult to define. In 1972, for example, two American scholars, Frank Dance and Carl Larson discovered from an extensive survey, 126 definitions for the term ‘communication’ – a term many would have thought they could define with ease. In Nigeria, fake news as a concept has assumed same dimension, with many having different meanings for the concept. It is however not an unusual occurrence because it is so across cultures. The English word, ‘Yes’ which appears simple is differently interpreted among several English speaking people. While some take it to mean a definite positive answer to an issue, others understand it to mean that the issue is likely or worthy of consideration. Thus, many Nigerians who have become quite concerned about fake news, a recent prevalent phenomenon in our clime, need to review their anxiety about it as well as their understanding of the nature and true meanin...
